transudates) were studied for serum and fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels and the results were compared with a group of 39 healthy controls. Serum and fluid. ADA activity was found to be significantly increased in patients with tuberculous effusions as compared to the other groups. A direct correlation between fluid and serum ADA activities was observed. In 20 patients (10 tuberculous, 6 malignant and 4transudates),T-lymphocyte counts were also made. It was observed that the percentage of fluid T-lymphocytes, in patients with tuberculous effusions, was higher than the others. The percentage of T-lymphocytes correlated well with the fluid ADA levels
