The potential of the artificial neural networks in the field of wear and manufacturing processes is presented in this paper. Their properties of learning and nonlinear behavior make them useful to model complex nonlinear processes, better than the analytical methods. The neural structures, considered appropriate for such models, are presented. The applications found in the referenced papers mainly consist of prediction and classification. They present some common points, specific to the field: wear processes and particles, manufacturing processes, friction parameters, faults in mechanical structures.
