Abstract: The breakdown voltages along cylindrical insulators in a homogenous electrical field in liquid nitrogen were studied. The insulators were stressed with a 50 Hz AC voltage and 1.2/50 lightning surges. The results are compared with the breakdown voltage in air and the differences are discussed. Furthermore some disturbing influences are identified
