The influence of different clinical variables on the marginal degradation of amalgam res-torations was studied in a clinical trial of class-I1 amalgam restorations. Seven Scandinavian dentists using 5 different alloys placed 468 restorations in 210 patients. The marginal degra-dation was scored on impressions of the restored teeth by using a six-point ordinal rating scale and was transformed to ridit values. After 5 years 126 patients with 296 restorations remained in the trial.
