We have used optical simulation as a means of setting component requirements, assessing component compatibility, and designing experiments in the MONET (Multiwavelength Optical Networking) Project. This paper reviews the simulation method, gives some examples of the types of simulations that have been performed, and discusses the validation of the simulations. 1
