Being a white encompasses a certain degree of privilege, status, class, and power, both social and discursive. This study explores how 19 white U.S. expatriate professionals construct their own social locations of whiteness and ascribe the meanings toward the consumption of cultural differences and diversities in viewing the non-Western Other. The idealized identity project (desiring to be cosmopolitans) participants have incorporated into their narratives of identity masks their whiteness and white invisibility.
