privacy, data sharing. The aim of this paper1 is to examine the way in which respondents understand and reason about confidentiality statements. These statements may have increasing importance in the current survey context. They are often a major way in which surveys attempt to communicate about confidentiality policy, with the intent of improving, or at least stabilizing, response rates. Four factors are identified here in respondent processing: 1. the effects of misleading associations; 2. the stimulation of doubt; 3. the effects of prior knowledge and experience; and 4.the search for evidence to support belief in confidentiality.
