Abstract We shall bring into focus the history of training and board certification in paediatric nephrology in the USA. In the three decades since 1974, the American Board of Pediatrics certified over 700 paediatric nephrologists with the current active workforce of 631, giving a manpower national average of 0.6 paediatric nephrologists per 100,000 populations under 18 years of age. The workforce entry and exit is in parallel with population growth, at least for the foreseeable future. Paediatric nephrology training in other parts of the world is extraordinary diverse.
