the California-Baja California section of the U.S.-Mexican border, exemplify small to mid-size urban pairs along the international border. One significant characteristic generally shared by these pairs is an inadequate geographic information infrastructure for supporting land use planning and other government decision making. The functioning of these governments can be made more efficient and effective if greater use is made of GIS and related geospatial technologies such as remote sensing and cartographic visualization. Cross-border interactions would also be facilitated if they could share a common transborder data set, knowledge base, and GIS tools for making decisions.
