It’s hard to believe, but the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) has been in operation for 20 years. As the first operational passive microwave imager, the SSM/I continues to provide unprecedented information to weather forecasters, NWP modelers, and to the climate community. Parameters such as rain rate, total precipitable water and snow cover are now used 24 hour/day, 7 day/week by all of the operational weather/climate centers throughout the world.
