Executive Summary

Climate Commitment initiative, and in doing so, pledged to become carbon neutral. Achieving carbon neutrality will prove to be an enormous undertaking for UAF, in that current campus greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions exceed 150,000 metric tons annually. Yet, becoming carbon neutral is only part of realizing overall campus sustainability. UAF has also created a Campus Environmental Stewardship Mission plan, which designates 7 main categories of sustainability (academics/research, energy, water, food/agriculture/forestry, land use & development, pollution, prevention/waste minimization, and social/community.) In focusing on each of these 7 categories, the University is addressing one or more of the 3 dimensions of sustainability (ecological or environmental, economic, and social sustainability). While achievement of campus sustainability and carbon neutrality is truly admirable, it will require the support and cooperation of the entire campus and community-at-large. Therefore, we propose a series of projects that will not only aid UAF in becoming carbon neutral, but also enhance campus sustainability efforts within each category of the UAF Environmental Stewardship Mission.
