Background Epidemiological studies examining the association between coffee consumption and risk of CHD have been equivocal. Coffee contains several biologically active substances that may have either beneficial or harmful effects on the cardiovascular system. Antioxidants or other protective compounds present in coffee may contribute to a lower risk of CHD among moderate drinkers of filtered coffee who are rapid metabolizers of caffeine. The incorporation of genetic modifiers of exposure or biologic effect of these compounds to the study of coffee and CHD could help identify these compounds and provide a better understanding of how they might protect against CHD.
