AbstracL In materials science, accurate high temperature thermodynamic measurements are needed to predict and to understand the properties of ncomponents systems. Two examples have been chosen to highlight this problem: i) from molar heat capacity determinations, the miscibility gap of the solid HgTe-CdTe system has been found; ii) in spite of several empirical and theoretical models, measurements of the enthalpy of formation of Cd-Ga-In-Sn-Zn liquid alloys are unavoidable. These examples show the necessity to develop very precise calorimetric methods in the high temperature range
