Spatial market equilibrium theory views physical trade as the driving force behind market integration. We analyze spatial price transmission between domestic tomato markets in Ghana to ascertain whether spatial price transmission veritably depends on direct physical trade between markets, or whether other forces drive market integration. Fresh tomato, the commodity of interest in this study and one of the most important commercially produced and consumed vegetables in Ghana, unlike grains, is bulky and perishable. A regime-dependent vector error correction model is used to investigate this question, and the results are compared with those of a linear vector error correction model. The results from both models suggest that markets are integrated in periods with and without trade. A third-market effect, whereby a particular producer market supplies all other markets connected by good quality roads in the system, offers a possible explanation for this finding. The study also reveals that markets in net tomato producing areas in Ghana, viz. Navrongo and Techiman, adjust to disequilibria, whereas markets in net tomato consuming centers in Ghana exhibit little degree of significan
