The interaction of soil moisture and incubation time on the survival and subsequent reproductive potential of Xiphinema index, and the effect of sand particle size on population increase, were studied under greenhouse conditions. In the absence of a host, fewer than 10 O/O of the nematodes survived for 60 days even under favorable (intermediate) moisture conditions. Survival was very low in both saturated and dry soils. Reproduction of X. index following incubation increased for those individuals that survived incubation in dry soil and decreased for those incubated under biologically favorable conditions.
