This article applies what we have learned from statistical consulting to teaching statistics. In our work with consultants, we define a consultation as any conversation with a purpose and intended result. This definition is sufficiently broad to include teaching. A central theme of our work with consultants is making distinctions that allow one to discover the active ingredients present in effective and efficient consultations so that one can, on demand, produce them in any situation. A natural question that arises is “To what extent can the lessons learned from coaching consultants be used to improve teaching quality?” We apply six domains or “observational lenses ” derived from our training and evaluation of consultants to teaching and learning. These six domains are the relationship domain, the attitude domain, the structure domain, the experience domain, the language domain, and the technical domain. We provide specific indicators of each domain and discuss selected examples of their application to the teaching/learning arena
