A series of exposure trials has been conducted to characterise the corrosivity of the atmosphere at 16 Defence bases in Eastern and Northern Australia. Atmospheric corrosivity was assessed by measuring the corrosion rates of specimens of steel, zinc and two high strength aluminium alloys when exposed on racks in the open air for periods of one to four years during the period 1988 to 1993. The results are presented in summary in Tables 12 and 13 which list the bases in increasing order of severity of atmospheric corrosion, and group them into atmospheric corrosivity categories (low to very high) according to the International Standard, ISO 9223: 1992(E), to enable a direct comparison with world standards
