City authorities have shown considerable reluctance in implementing integrated pricing policies in urban contexts. This is due to a perceived lack of public acceptability, particularly related to road pricing. Nevertheless, integrated urban transport strategies can be proposed to improve transport conditions through trans modal pricing based on two fundamental principles: · optimising modal split; · pricing the environmental externalities of private transport. We present the framework and the first results of the TransPrice ° (Trans Modal Integrated Urban Transport Pricing for Optimum Modal Split) project that aims to evaluate the potential benefits of various mode choices-in urban transport pricing measures. Benefits are estimated both by the use of modelling and by experimental demonstrations. The objectives of this project are as follows:- to investigate the technical and financial options for integrated trans modal pricing in urban areas; 2- to assess potential user response and impacts on the structure of transport demand;- to specify and demonstrate trans modal pricing and integrated payment systems in selected European cities and assess effects on modal split, and public and political acceptability;- to evaluate rans modal pricing and integrated payment scenarios by way of multicriteria analysis.
