Damage detection in hybrid fiber reinforced composites containing fully-integrated aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the polymer matrix is reported. Due to unique alignment and distribution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through the thickness of the composites, significant interlaminar and intralaminar mechanical property improvements have been observed for these nano-engineered composites, including interlaminar strength and toughness. These materials exhibit high electrical conductivity that is enhanced by many orders of magnitude: 106 and 108 for the in-plane and through thickness directions, respectively.
