In pediatrics, skeletal maturity, also called “bone age”, an expression of biological maturity of a child, is an important quantitative measure for the clinical diagnosis of endocrinological problems and growth disorders. Bone age is also used in monitoring children with hormone therapy. Skeletal maturity may be assessed by analysis of the ossification centers of the hand, foot, knee, elbow or pelvis but most often used is the hand. Skeletal maturity diagnosis is usually based on a visual comparison of a left-hand wrist radiograph with atlas patterns and the most common method used is the Tanner-Whitehouse method.
