2 The purpose of this Master’s Thesis is to test and evaluate tracking of mobile telephones based on the signals received from the mobile at surrounding base stations in UMTS. In the next generation of mobile telephones the mobile equipment will be more powerful and more services related to the user’s position will arise. There are other fields of use for positioning of mobiles than the commercial ones. For instance, American mobile telephone operators have a system underway which is supposed to position emergency number callers. The localization may also be used to improve the communication quality of service given to mobile telephone users from the operator.
