To assess the prevalence of acanthosis nigricans in a group of First Nations children identified as at-risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Risk factors included obesity, hypertension, exer-cise intolerance or hyperglycemia. Elementary school children aged 5 to 14 years from 3 First Nations communities were screened for risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Identified children were enrolled in at-risk clinics to address their specific risk factors. During the clin-ics, the children were examined to assess the presence of acanthosis nigricans. A total of 240 children were screened. Risk factors were identified in 140 children (58%). Of the identified children, 117 (83%) attended the at-risk clinics.
