Characteristics of a flow in the boundary layer over roughness areas in the middle distance behind taller arrays in a sequence of small localized urban canopies with various heights were studied by wind-tunnel experiment under neutral stratification, where “middle ” means that the fetch is insufficient for the flow to adapt to the surface geometry but farther than the reattachment position. It was found that profiles of the Reynolds stress had double-layered structure and the flow was in a semi-equilibrium state at a short distance. Referring the experiment, comparison among CFD models, expressing buildings explicitly and applying to the large urban areas, was proposed. Key words: CFD model simulation, urban canopy, wind-tunnel experiment 1
