Field experiments with pots were carried out from 1985-1988 to know the effects of chemical fertilizer and / or farmyard manure as organic fertilizer on buckwheat growth at the different altitudinal sites in Gifu prefecture extending to higher altitude of 1500 m with arable lands. Higher grain yield was obtained at the chemical compound fertilizer plot (C) followed by the plot with fannyard manure (M + C) and the least on the sole farmyard manure plot (M). Nevertheless, a decreased in yield on plot (C) attributable to severe lodging caused by a long duration rainfall was observed on the 360 m site.
