Fertilizer Response of Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) in Comparison between Chemical Fertilizer and Farmyard Manure at Different Altitudes

Field experiments with pots were carried out from 1985-1988 to know the effects of chemical fertilizer and / or farmyard manure as organic fertilizer on buckwheat growth at the different altitudinal sites in Gifu prefecture extending to higher altitude of 1500 m with arable lands. Higher grain yield was obtained at the chemical compound fertilizer plot (C) followed by the plot with fannyard manure (M + C) and the least on the sole farmyard manure plot (M). Nevertheless, a decreased in yield on plot (C) attributable to severe lodging caused by a long duration rainfall was observed on the 360 m site. The yields on the combined fannyard and fertilizer (M + C) plot werenot remarkably affected. The experimental results showed the fact that the higher and secure yields were could be obtained at the 500 m site and followed by the 1360 m with low temperature. On the other hand, higher temperature could be cause of lower yield in the 10m site. Thus, chemical fertilizer was readily available for plant growth under the favourable climatic conditions, but fannyard manure composed mainly of rice straw would play important role in preventing decreasing yield under unfavourable conditions such as excessive rain in the 360 m site
