Abstract. This is a critical assessment of some of the new paradigms of software engineering. The Unified Modeling Language, the notion of de-sign patterns, and some ideas for future and more advanced modelling elements are investigated. This is done from a practical and theoretical point of view, with a focus on real-time and embedded systems develop-ment.1 1
