gram recognizes and encourages the con-servation of outstanding examples of our country’s natural history. It is the only natu-ral areas program of national scope that identifies and recognizes the best examples of ecological and geological features in both public and private ownership. The program was established by the secretary of the inte-rior in 1962, under authority of the Historic Sites Act of 1935. NNLs are designated by the secretary of the interior, with the owner’s concurrence. To date, fewer than 600 sites have been designated. The pro-gram aims to encourage and support volun-tary preservation and to strengthen the pub-lic’s appreciation of America’s natural her-itage.
