As the Health Physics Society approaches the 21st century, it is time to evaluate the changing role of radiation safety in the United States. Clearly the Society has changed since its formation in 1956. Early members of the Society were mostly concerned with understanding the biological effects of radiation and establishing programs for controlling radiation exposures. Today, relatively few of the Society’s members are engaged in academic or research functions, or development of radiation safety standards. The largest proportion of members is involved in the implementation of radiation safety programs.
