Abstract. ISO studies of normal galaxies in the local Universe have revealed basic new properties with significant implications for the star formation process and cosmology. This article will describe prominent ISO surveys, and review some general statistical results, grouping them by wavelength range. First the mid-infrared low-resolution spectroscopy and broad-band imaging and photometry, then far-infrared photometry and spectrocopy of the fine-structure lines. A glimpse of the profusion of exciting results on individual objects will also be included
