This paper focuses on a refined modelling of the dynamics of thin plates formed by stacking layers of functionally graded material laminated with piezoelectric layers and studies its actuator capabilities. The purpose is to investigate the effectiveness of piezoelectric layers for plate shape regulating by using internal stresses. The influence of piezoelectric actuators and their positioning is considered. The optimal voltages for shape control are obtained for some predetermined locations of the piezo-actuators by using a genetic optimization procedure. A related damage identification problem is formulated and solved using static data and genetic optimization. Several numerical results are reported
