This paper is a preliminary exploration of some of the literature that may help us understand the regeneration of Buddhism taking place in Cambodia following the conflict and destruction of the Khmer Rouge era. Although Ebihara et al. (1994: 13) remark that the importance of Buddhism in pre-revolutionary Cambodia can scarcely be overstated, it has often been awarded a peripheral place in the literature. This paper is therefore an attempt to draw together the threads that are to be found in the literature to try and gain an overview of the role that Buddhism, in combination with animism, has played in rural life in the past in Cambodia.
