Abstract. A differential-algebraic model which links the outbreak of harmful phytoplankton blooms is considered. In the proposed mathematical model, two interacting phytoplankton population are investigated by a two-species Lotka-Volterra competition differential model from a viewpoint of economic perspective. The occurrence mechanism of harmful phytoplankton blooms is revealed by analyzing the local stability of the proposed model system at the interior equilibrium. In order to eliminate the harmful phytoplankton blooms and maintain the economic interest of harvesting at an ideal level, a biological control strategy is designed. Finally, a numerical simulation is carried out to show the consistency with theoretical analysis obtained in thi...
