Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to a number of optimization problems with much success. The process of natural selection effects in the creation of a number of potentially optimal solutions to some complex problem. Unfortunately, one of the major disadvantages of GA is that they are very slow. In this paper the application of GA to the school timetabling problem is discussed. Due to various parameter constraints, new algorithms and special methods of dealing with the timetabling problem are also introduced. They are aimed at reducing the execution time and resolving the various constraints at the same time. The results show that GA running concurrently with the new algorithms and methods is able to outperform handmade timetables
