Over the last twenty years, the technique of stFe Mdssbauer spectroscopy has been widely used to characterize the structural role of iron in a broad range of glass compositions. This overview of previous work on iron-bearing glasses covers both geological and ceramic re-search on Fe-bearing Na-Si-O, borate, phosphate, and more complex silicate systems. Mdssbauer work on multi-component synthetic compositions is reviewed in terms of the effects ofeach separate cation on Fet * lFe2 * ratios and iron site occupancies
