The internet-enabled new business practices of the trucking industry contribute directly to economic growth. In addition, the trucking industry contributes indirectly to the growth in the general economy as other sectors, such as manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade, depend on the value added by trucking services. We define e-commerce to include business processes that permit transactions and trade to take place on the web, as well as processes that use the internet as a repository, an enabler, and a conduit of information1. Trucking firms are using the internet’s strategic building blocks of distributed access to valuable information, quick communication, and boundary-defying connectivity to exploit current resources and capabilities and to explore new e-commerce business opportunities. This paper proceeds as follows. Section A discusses the background of the trucking industry, concluding that the industry is highly competitive and volatile. Section B discusses the impact o
