In chapter 1, we investigate the elastic properties of diopside, CaMgSi2O6, at ambient pressure and room temperature by Brillouin spectroscopy. The thirteen single-crystal elastic moduli (Cij) of two samples of diopsidic pyroxenes close to the ideal composition from different locations have been measured. No unusual compositional dependence of Cij values or the shear modulus near end-member diopside composition is observed. In chapter 2, we further investigate the elastic properties of diopside at high pressure using a diamond anvil cell.
