Graduation date: 1990Using techniques that permit the direct observation of\ud fetuses in vivo, prenatal behavioral development was\ud compared among four species in the rodent family Muridae:\ud the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), Mongolian gerbil\ud (Meriones unguiculatus), cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus), and\ud spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus). Rattus and Meriones bear\ud altricial offspring, as do nearly all other Murid rodents.\ud But Sigmodon and Acomys have independently evolved the\ud reproduction of precocial young.
