Fisheries Management Issues in Vietnam

Abstract only.Being a country located in the west of BIEN DONG (the South China Sea) with more than 3,260 km of shore line, about 3,000 large and small islands, more than 100 estuaries and about one million km 2 of EEZ, Vietnam is considered as a country in rich of marine bio-diversity and fisheries resources which will create a potential for development of marine fisheries in Vietnam in the future. Marine fisheries in Vietnam is\ud considered as a small-scale fisheries. There are about 85 thousand of motorized fishing vessels operating in seawater of Vietnam of which around 14 thousand were equipped with main engine capacity of more than 90 Horse power that are able to operate in off-shore areas while almost fishing vessels are operating in near shore water. Because of a weak of management measures, marine fisheries in Vietnam is facing many issues that need to be improved for sustainable marine fisheries development in Vietnam like over-fishing in near shore areas, IUU fishing, vessel register, fishing licensing, etc& Vietnam was a member of WTO from last year, therefore many international issues related to marine fisheries should be considered like over-capacity, IUU fishing, fisheries subsidy, small-scale fisheries, endangered aquatic species under CITES, traceability, certification and labelling ets& The policies and measures to develop a sustainable marine fisheries are discussed in the paper
