The cost and response burden associated to the survey activities have always been a major concern to Statistics Canada. These issues are especially important for monthly surveys. One option is the use of administrative data. Statistics Canada has been accessing the Canadian Goods and Services Tax (GST) data since 1997. These data offer the potential of replacing monthly economic survey data. In this paper, we discuss the processing of the monthly GST files, namely, the editing and imputation of outliers and missing data, and the calendarization. Then, we focus on the application of a model that uses clean calendarized GST data to replace monthly survey data while respecting the timeliness issue.
