Malaysia is currently adopting the Five-Fuel Diversification Strategy energy mix implemented in the year 1999. According to this strategy, the energy mix in Malaysia is contributed by five main sources, namely natural gas, coal, oil, hydro and renewable energy. Among the fossil fuel resources for energy generation, coal is offered the most attractive solution to the increasing fuel cost. The consumption of coal in Malaysia is growing at the rate of 9.7 % per year since 2002. The total coal consumption for electricity generation in Malaysia is projected to increase from 12.4 million tons in 2005 to 36 million tons in 2020.
