Time delay estimation has been a research topic of significant practical importance in many fields (radar, sonar, seismology, geo-physics, ultrasonics, hands-free communications, etc.). It is a first stage that feeds into subsequent processing blocks for identifying, localizing, and tracking radiating sources.
