MANAGING VOLUNTEERS FOR A PUBLIC GARDEN

Without volunteers, most arboreta, botanical gardens or public gardens would cease to exist. Not just in the gardening world, volunteers have played a large role in the growth and prosperity of our nation. In the USA, the numbers are astronomical. 44 percent of adults volunteer. 83.9 million American adults volunteer, representing the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of $239 billion. For grant purposes, the value of a volunteer hour in 2008 was $20.25. There are millions of people ready, willing, and able to give their time and efforts if just called upon – and if gardening is a passion in their lives. Volunteer work benefits not only the organization, but also the people donating their ability to help others.
