Organic N mineralization by extracellular proteases affects inor-ganic N availability and loss. Soil Nmineralization is slowed by addition of purified protease inhibitors. We hypothesized that elevated concen-trations of protease inhibitors in plant residues would reduce soil and plant residue N mineralization.
