A methodology for estimating the age distribution and survival func-tions of an urban building stock is presented. A random sample of the undemolished part of the building stock together with a complete inven-tory count of the demolished part yields a Kaplan-Meier estimator for the survival function. The method was applied to real data from a German urban stock. We describe the process of data collection, perform the sur-vival analysis and estimate the dynamics of the building stock. Through a Weibull fit we estimate little change in the existing building stock in the future. In the appendix, we discuss the notion of service life, give a short introduction to survival analysis, and explain a method for obtaining an integral partition of a g...
