Lack of detection of the amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) in Madagascar The global fungal disease chytridiomycosis can have catastrophic effects on amphibian populations leading to declines and even extinctions. Madagascar with its highly endemic and diverse amphibians is particularly vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases. In this study we report on a histological survey of chytridiomycosis at multiple localities in eastern Madagascar. The amphibian chytrid fungus was not detected in 527 frogs that altogether were examined.
