RapidPrototypinghasbeenproposedas a meansto re-ducedevelopmenttimeandcostsof real-timesystems.Our approachusesa heterogeneous,tightly coupledmultipro-cessorsystembasedon off-the-shelfcomponentsas target architecturefor an executableprototype,which is gener-atedfromthespecificationin an automateddesignprocess. Here,too,weaim to useexistingtoolsand languages.But interfaceandcommunicationsynthesis,whilebeingthekey requirementofanautomatedtranslationofa abstractspec-ificationtoa distributedsystem,is notyetstate-of-the-art. Thesensitivityof theoverallperformanceof multiproces-sor systemsto overheadand latencyintroducedby com-municationon theother handcalls for an efficientinter-processcommunication(IPC). Thispaperpresentsconcept andimplementationof IPC functionswhich,implementing themessagequeuesemanticsof thespecificationlanguage SDL, linksthestandardcomponentsof our multiprocessor systemin an efficientmanner,whileat thesametimepro-vidingtheinterfacesynthesisneededby theautomatedgen-erationofa rapidprototype.Theexperiencesgainedwhen implementinga non-trivial,real-world CAN controllerand monitorapplicationonour rapidprototypingenvironment, aredescribedasafirstproofof concept
