Learning History through Constructing Interpretations: Visualization of the Past

within the problem group named “Political Communication in the 16th – 19th centuries”; I also share the responsibility for curriculum and course design, as well as for creating the Didactic Package with assessment criteria and tests for students. I was often thinking of carrying out some research that could be based upon, connected with-and – what is more important- contribute to both my scholarly research and the courses I teach at the moment. This is exactly the case with the project that I propose now: as a scholar, I deal with Modern History, and a huge part of my work is devoted to images and visual culture in the discourse and political communication of the Past; as a teacher, I believe that History is nothing more than an interpretation, and that Learning of History must be based upon “doing”, “constructing ” interpretations, not upon “remembering ” or “learning by heart”. So for me the research topic, being formulated in a way I have done it, is, first, “what I care about ” and, secondly, is sort of a challenge, an attempt to “marry ” my personal research, methodological and didactic interests and see how it all works from the point of view of a student that learns History. 2 Research backgroun
