Driving Performance

The dangers of cell phone use while driving have been heavily debated in society, highlighting the importance of the issue to the public. The current study examined the effects of cell phone use on driving performance. A sample of 242 drivers was studied on an urban, college campus. Researchers observed drivers and noted whether or not they were conversing on a cell phone and if they made a complete stop at the given stop sign. The study found that drivers who were conversing on a cell phone were less likely to make a complete stop at the stop sign. Lawmakers can use this information in support of an in-vehicle cell phone ban to help minimize the consequences of driver inattention
