Combined heat and mass is a method to simultaneously reduce consumption of heat and mass in a process plants and to reduce the plant’s capital as well as operating costs. In this work, a new and efficient procedure that can simultaneously minimise a process plant’s fresh mass consumption (such as water, gas and solvent) and heat usage is proposed. This method begins with the application of mass integration followed by heat integration to target and design a network with minimum usage of fresh mass and heat utility usage. The new procedure is superior in terms of its capability in tackling both mass transfer-based and non-mass transfer-based systems which previous literatures have overlooked.
