Abstract. A study of debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers has been made within the context of the glacier inventory of the Mendoza River basin, Argentina. There is a relationship between precipitation amounts and types of glacier activity. Covered ice is observed to be distributed in four altitudinal facies: thermokarst, structural debris, inactive rock glacier and fossil ice rock glacier. Debris cover varies from a few centimetres to many metres at lower altitudes. The sequence of four facies is explained as the result of four warm and cold phases of the Holocene.
