Because divorce is both a legal and a family functioning process, collaboration between the family law and family therapy professionals is necessary in order to effect the most helpful services for restructuring families. This theoretical article begins with a review of systemic principles necessary for any partnering relationship to work. Delineation of the historical development of family therapy and family law collaboration leads up to the discussion of possible services. For some time, family therapists have been offering the services of custody evaluation, conjoint divorce therapy, divorcing family education, and mediation.
